Relationships evolve over time, and so do we. If you’re standing at a crossroads in your marriage or long-term partnership—wondering whether to stay, leave, or recommit—you’re not alone. Many people in midlife and beyond find themselves questioning the path they’re on, especially after decades of shared history. This uncertainty can feel overwhelming, but it’s also an opportunity to gain clarity, confidence, and peace.

Discernment counselling is designed to help you:

  • Explore your true feelings about your relationship
  • Understand the root of your doubts or conflicts
  • Make a decision that aligns with your values, needs, and future vision

What Is Discernment Counselling?

Discernment counselling is a short-term, structured process designed specifically for individuals or couples who are unsure about the future of their relationship. Unlike traditional couples therapy, which focuses on repairing the relationship, discernment counselling helps you gain clarity about whether to:

  • Stay and work on the relationship
  • Separate or divorce
  • Take a break to reflect and reassess

This approach is particularly helpful for those who feel stuck, conflicted, or exhausted by ongoing relationship struggles.

How It Works

Discernment counselling typically involves 1–5 sessions, either individually or with your partner. The process focuses on:

  1. Understanding Your Feelings: Exploring your emotions, fears, and hopes for the relationship.
  2. Identifying Patterns: Recognizing the cycles or dynamics that may be contributing to your uncertainty.
  3. Clarifying Your Values: Understanding what truly matters to you in a relationship and in life.
  4. Exploring Options: Weighing the pros and cons of staying, leaving, or recommitting.
  5. Making a Decision: Gaining the confidence to choose a path that feels right for you.

Is Discernment Counseling Right for You?

Discernment Counseling May Be Helpful If…

✅ You’re feeling unsure about whether to stay in your relationship.
✅ You and your partner are stuck in recurring conflicts and can’t seem to move forward.
✅ You’re considering separation or divorce but feel overwhelmed by the decision.
✅ You want to recommit to your relationship but need clarity on how to do so.
✅ You’re navigating grey divorce and want to explore your options with support.
✅ You’re in a long-term relationship and feel like something is missing or unresolved.

Discernment Counseling May Not Be the Best Fit If…

❌ You’ve already decided to end the relationship and are looking for support in navigating the separation process (individual therapy or divorce coaching may be more appropriate).
❌ Your relationship involves abuse or safety concerns (in these cases, individual therapy and safety planning are prioritized).
❌ You’re looking for traditional couples therapy to repair and rebuild your relationship (discernment counselling is focused on clarity, not repair).

The Discernment Process: What to Expect

Step 1: Exploring Your Feelings

In the first session, we’ll focus on your individual perspective—your emotions, concerns, and hopes for the relationship. If you’re attending with your partner, we’ll create a space for both of you to share openly and transparently.

Key Questions:

  • What do you love about your relationship?
  • What feels challenging or unresolved?
  • What are your fears about the future?

Step 2: Identifying Relationship Patterns

We’ll explore the dynamics in your relationship that may be contributing to your uncertainty. This could include:

  • Communication breakdowns
  • Emotional disconnection
  • Recurring conflicts or arguments
  • Differences in values or life goals

Goal: To understand what’s working and what’s not, so you can make an informed decision.

Step 3: Clarifying Your Values

Your values are the compass for your decision. We’ll explore:

  • What do you truly want in a relationship?
  • What are your non-negotiables?
  • How does your current relationship align (or not align) with these values?

You may be asked to reflect on what a fulfilling relationship looks like to you and whether your current relationship can provide that.

Step 4: Exploring Your Options

Together, we’ll weigh the pros and cons of each possible path:

  1. Staying and Working on the Relationship: What would it take to repair and rebuild? Are you both willing to put in the effort?
  2. Separating or Divorcing: What would this look like for you emotionally, financially, and socially?
  3. Taking a Break: Would a temporary separation provide the clarity you need?

Goal: To help you see the realities of each option and how they align with your values and needs.

Step 5: Making Your Decision

By the end of the discernment process, you’ll have:

  • A clearer understanding of your feelings and needs
  • Confidence in the path you choose
  • A plan for next steps, whether that’s couples therapy, individual therapy, or separation support

How Discernment Counselling Can Help with Specific Challenges

Grey Divorce

If you’re considering grey divorce, discernment counseling can help you:

  • Explore the emotional and practical implications of separating later in life.
  • Navigate family dynamics, such as adult children or blended families.
  • Gain clarity on whether divorce aligns with your values and long-term goals.

Blending Families

If you’re navigating the complexities of blending families, discernment counselling can help you:

  • Explore whether your current relationship structure is working for everyone involved.
  • Clarify your priorities and boundaries as a couple and as a family.

Empty Nest Syndrome

If you’re adjusting to life after your children have moved out, discernment counseling can help you:

  • Reconnect with your partner and yourself.
  • Decide whether your relationship still meets your needs in this new chapter.
